Ever heard the term "prosumer" or "pro-sumer"? Most people have not, but it is becoming a household word in some homes. More and more people are becoming aware of this new term describing how people are changing the way they shop.

It's a new term I first heard defined by Bill Quain and now some leading economists are foretelling about the new exciting e-commerce trend involving pro-sumers.

The timing is perfect, too! With the economy and people tightening their belt, people are evaluating and scrutinizing the way they buy so they can make our dollars stretch.

It is, for the most part, the most practical way to spend that hard-earned money.

Consider this - Prosumer shopping is when you, the consumer, own your own store so that you can make some of the profit every time you buy your everyday household products like shampoo, shoes, snacks AND everything else in between. Most people think it is smart shopping is to get huge discounts or bargains, but they're still spending money making someone else rich.

A new and better way is to buy from yourself, to buy and think smarter, not cheaper. As a "pro-sumer" you are the producer AND the consumer.

If you are thinking traditionally, right away visions of a brick and mortar store, overhead, employees, customers, etc. come to mind, but that's not being smart either. Being a prosumer is selling online, catching the growing ecommerce wave and turning some of your household expenses into "Household Gold".

The two fit together like a hand and glove and are superior to regular storefronts, drop-shipping, online auctions, website affiliates or referral commissions. It's plain and simple. You own your own friendly and easily accessible online store.

Here are some reasons why you should be a prosumer.

  • This new trend is barreling full force into our lives at a time when our struggling economy is changing the way we shop. Many shop owners are weighing if it's worth all the investment, high overhead and reduced amount of shoppers coming into their stores.
  • They know the baby-boomers, the generation with the most people, are getting older and want to save money, spending more time enjoying life and not running around in a mall. Store owners also recognize that the techie younger generation is online, especially with all the new mobile devices, not buying as much as they used to in their stores. Of course, the malls will always have the window shoppers who rarely buy, but have a lot of fun.
  • It's Convenient

Like all ecommerce "shops", your customers want shopping to be convenient and not have to drive to a store, fight traffic and crowds, spend money for gas and waste valuable time. They can shop in their pajamas, if they want, 24/7 and have products delivered to their door, especially if your store offers free shipping on a certain amount of products in their carts.

It's smart to shop at your own store

You, and your family, can be your own best customer. Since you're going to buy products, cosmetics, cookies and household cleaners, why not buy from yourself?

Add a few customers who don't see the huge benefit of having their own store, and you have extra income. You can offer savings to friends and family, and before you know it, you'll have a number of Customers, just like a real business. Only you won't have the traditional overhead expenses!

Some may even see the vision of having a prosumer store giving them substantial referral benefits. Then you'll really grow some "Household Gold!"

So, being a prosumer, you have a golden opportunity to have your own store, make and save money with little overhead and worry. With the internet leading the market forces even internationally, you have all to gain and nothing to lose having your own prosumer store.
